In an important advisory, Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias has issued a warning to Chicago residents about holiday-themed texting scams. These scams falsely claim that individuals have unpaid traffic violations or tolls and threaten their vehicle registration and driving privileges. The messages try to extract sensitive information from unsuspecting recipients.

Giannoulias stressed the importance of being aware of civil litigation risks tied to these scams. He stated, “These scam texts mimic legitimate sources, but our office does not contact citizens regarding their driver's license status through text.” He urged residents to remain vigilant and report any phishing attempts to the Federal Trade Commission, helping safeguard their personal information.

As the holiday season approaches, authorities are reminding everyone to be cautious and informed about potential employment scams targeting vulnerable individuals.

Igors Kazakovs, a 42-year-old resident of Chicago, has been charged with his third DUI after a recent incident in McHenry County. Kazakovs reportedly rear-ended another vehicle that was stopped at a red light. Authorities noted that he displayed clear signs of intoxication, with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.191, significantly above the legal limit.

This new charge adds to Kazakovs' lengthy criminal history, which includes a tragic DUI crash in 2005 that claimed the lives of a cab driver and his passenger. For that incident, Kazakovs served 16 years in prison.

McHenry County State's Attorney Randi Freese stressed the need for aggressive prosecution in DUI cases to protect the community from repeat offenders. Kazakovs is set to appear in court on December 22 as the legal proceedings continue regarding his concerning record of traffic violations.

In a significant update to Illinois civil regulations, Governor J.B. Pritzker has signed a bill that raises the mandatory driving test age for seniors from 75 to 79 years. This progressive legislation received unanimous support from the General Assembly and aims to help older adults maintain their driving privileges for a longer period.

Under the new law, individuals aged 87 and above will now be required to demonstrate their driving competency in order to renew their licenses. This change aligns with public safety goals while promoting inclusivity in real estate law, allowing seniors to stay active within their Chicago communities.

AARP Illinois praised the “Road Safety and Fairness Act,” highlighting its role in combating age discrimination. The legislation also introduces a provision allowing family members to voice concerns regarding a driver's capabilities, enhancing oversight without sacrificing anonymity.
