Severe Flooding Hits Virginia's Dante Community, Prompting Emergency Response Efforts

A recent intense storm in Dante, Virginia, triggered swift-water rescue operations as first responders, including Capt. Wesley Lawson of the St. Paul Fire Department, navigated the swollen Lick Creek to save residents trapped by the rising waters.

Thirteen individuals sustained injuries during the deluge, with one woman needing surgery after being rescued from a culvert nearly 2,000 feet downstream. She is currently receiving treatment at Johnson City Medical Center in Tennessee.

Local leaders are stepping up in response. Ninth District U.S. Rep. Morgan Griffith and County Supervisor Lou Wallace are actively working to secure federal assistance as the community copes with the devastating effects of flooding on businesses and homes.

In total, County Administrator Lonzo Lester reported that 36 people were rescued from the floodwaters. To support displaced families, a flood recovery center has been established. This situation underscores the urgent need for resources and the importance of community resilience, emergency management, and real estate law considerations following natural disasters.
